The best Cold Brew recipes

Cold brew has long been one of the most popular trends among coffee drinkers. The reason: Cold brew tastes particularly delicious and is very easy to prepare.
Sweet, full-bodied, chocolaty or a little fruity. Cold Brew has many facets and here we show you a small selection of our recipes. These include the classic Cold Brew, a Coffee & Yuzu Tonic, an Iced Latte and a summery Cold Brew Shakerato with Orange. We recommend balanced light or medium roasts for Cold Brew. Lighter roasts are more suitable for Cold Brew that is drunk neat without milk. Medium roasts may be more suitable for a Cold Brew concentrate, for example, to emphasize an intense chocolaty coffee flavor in an Iced Latte.

Cold Brew recipe - the classic

The classic recipe for making cold brew at home is simple and requires little work. Through the slow cold extraction, the flavors develop a full body and a lot of sweetness.

For some recipes it is recommended to use a Cold Brew concentrate instead of the regular Cold Brew. The ingredients remain the same, only the ratio of coffee to water changes. Cold Brew concentrate is less suitable for pure enjoyment due to its intensity.

What you need

  • A good filter coffee, for example Alaka or Tango
  • Filtered water or a low sodium still water

Brew Ratio Cold Brew

  • 100g of ground coffee to 1 liter of water (ratio 1:10).

Brew Ratio Cold Brew Concentrate

  • 500g ground coffee to 1 liter of water (ratio 1:2)

How to make Cold Brew

  1. Grind coffee fresh with a coarse grind.
  2. Pour water, stir well and mix. The entire bed of coffee must be moistened.
  3. Close container and place in refrigerator or leave at room temperature for at least 12 hours.
  4. After the time is up, use a fine filter to filter out the coffee grounds. Now you can enjoy your Cold Brew.
  5. Store your cold brew back in the refrigerator.

How to make Cold Brew Concentrate

  1. Grind coffee fresh with a medium to coarse grind.
  2. Pour water, stir well and mix. The entire bed of coffee must be moistened.
  3. Close container and place in refrigerator or let stand at room temperature for at least 12 hours.
  4. At the end of the time, use a fine filter to filter out the coffee grounds.
  5. Store your cold brew back in the refrigerator.

Good to know

  • The longer you let the coffee brew, the more intense the flavor will be. Try out for yourself what you like best.
  • Use the Hario Filter-in-Bottle as a simple cold brew maker for your home.
  • For pure enjoyment of Cold Brew, add a slice of orange or lemon as needed
  • Cold Brew keeps in the refrigerator for about 14 days

 

Iced Latte with Cold Brew Concentrate

Cold Brew Concentrate provides a significantly higher flavor intensity thanks to its higher concentration. With the right recipe, Cold Brew concentrate is a practical espresso substitute and can be used in a wide range of beverages. The preparation is very simple.

What you need

  • A rather chocolaty filter coffee, like Santiago oder Don Tacho
  • Filtered water or a low sodium still water
  • Cold Brew concentrate
  • Milk or oat milk
  • Ice cubes
  • Milk frother or espresso machine to foam the milk

How to make Iced Latte

  1. Fill a glass with ice cubes and set aside.
  2. Froth 180-200ml of milk or a vegan milk alternative and pour into the glass.
  3. Remove Cold Brew concentrate from the refrigerator and slowly float 2cl into the glass with the frothed milk. That’s it – now enjoy.

Good to know

  • You can determine the ratio of coffee to water yourself. We recommend a very high concentration for an intense flavor.
  • Especially oat milk tastes very good

Coffee & Yuzu Tonic

As soon as the temperatures rise, so does the thirst for refreshing coffee drinks. Coffee & Yuzu Tonic is a summer all-rounder. Popular in our cafés, we also take a chocolatey Cold Brew concentrate as a base and pour on a sparkling yuzu tonic.

What you need

  • A rather chocolaty filter coffee, like Santiago oder Don Tacho
  • Filtered water or a low sodium still water
  • Cold Brew concentrate
  • Yuzu tonic water
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slice for garnish

How to make Coffee & Yuzu Tonic

  1. Fill a tumbler glass with ice cubes as large as possible.
  2. Slowly pour the tonic water into the glass at a 45 degree angle, this way little carbonation is lost.
  3. Remove Cold Brew concentrate from the refrigerator and slowly float 2cl of it into the tonic glass. Garnish with orange slice and enjoy.

Good to know

  • If you can’t find a yuzu tonic, a high-quality dry or botanical tonic is also suitable.

 

Cold Brew Orange Shakerato

Those who have tried it know, coffee and orange go very well together, last summer we created the Espresso à l'Orange. But this very creamy-sweet drink also works wonderfully with Cold Brew as Shakerato.

What you need

  • A rather chocolaty filter coffee, like Santiago oder Don Tacho
  • Filtered water or a low sodium still water
  • Cold Brew concentrate
  • Orange blossom syrup (e.g. Gomme syrup from Giffard)
  • Freshly squeezed orange juice
  • Ice cubes and orange slice

How to make Cold Brew Shakerato

  1. Fill a glass (e.g. a tumbler) with 2-3 ice cubes and set aside.
  2. Fill the cocktail shaker with plenty of large ice cubes.
  3. Add 4cl of Cold Brew concentrate, 6cl freshly squeezed orange juice and 1cl orange blossom syrup to the shaker.
  4. Shake all ingredients vigorously in the shaker for about 15 seconds and double strain into the glass.

Good to know

  • It is especially important to use freshly squeezed orange juice. When the oranges are ripe and juicy, the drink tastes best.
  • Instead of a cocktail shaker, you can also use another lockable container.
  • Double strain, this technique allows only the fine-pored, creamy foam to end up in the glass.
